I’m Miranda Savioli with today’s health news.
Walmart, Walgreens, Target and GNC are facing demands for quality control reports and ingredient
lists from the New York attorney general after research found that 4 out of 5 store-brand
supplements contained none of the herbs listed on their packaging and some even included
undeclared allergens and fillers, according to the associated press. Some say these investigations
are wasting money, as the FDA already has this information; however, the FDA can only
recall an herbal supplement after it has already been proven unsafe; the agency is not required
to regulate such supplements. These manufacturers have until March 13 to include more detailed
ingredient lists and quality control reports, among other information describing company
safety and testing measures.
